The WPA Film Library, founded by independent producers in 1987, began as a repository of archival and contemporary stock footage for documentaries. In 1989, the company merged with the MPI Media Group, one of the country’s oldest independent home video labels and the producer of hundreds of documentaries. Since its inception, the WPA Film Library has grown into one of the world’s leading footage sources, offering tens of thousands of hours of high quality, vintage and contemporary images, and a leading online stock footage resource.

In the 1990s, WPA transferred the entire British Pathe Newsreel Collection from its 35mm originals to D2 video. This collection, covering world events and personalities from 1895 to 1970, is one of the WPA’s most popular holdings. The WPA also exclusively represents the archives of public broadcaster WETA, with coverage of Congressional and Senate Hearings from the 1970s on, among them the Waco, Watergate and Whitewater, as well as hearings on the Iran Contra Affair and the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

A particular strength of WPA’s stock footage library is a series of Music Collections covering many genres, such as the classic pre-MTV music television shows Hullabaloo and Music Scene and country and western star Willie Nelson’s TV library, including the Porter Wagoner Show, Pop Goes The Country and The Beat. WPA exclusively represents the innovative Soul! series, recorded in the early 1970s and featuring music, interviews and poetry by African American icons like Muhammad Ali, Harry Belafonte and Stevie Wonder.

A client favorite is the Color Stock Collection from the 1950s, documenting Americana lifestyle images in luminous color, along with hundreds of vintage training films, funny video clips, home movies dating back to the 1920s and classic commercials. Various independent cinematographers contribute gorgeous contemporary footage of nature and cultural landmarks on a regular basis. A highlight of this genre is Baraka, with breathtaking images from across the globe shot in 70mm.

Recent additions to the WPA Film Library include gorgeous film footage on the spiritual, ecological and economic significance of water, contemporary Afghanistan footage, and coverage of late 1980s celebrities on the red carpet.

The WPA is proud to offer one of the largest, most varied and fast growing stock footage libraries in the industry.
