| Description: | A contribution to peace: Prime Minister, Ramsay MacDonald talks about National Defense. Mr. MacDonald talks about recent "white paper" and explains why government thinks it is necessary to increase money spent on defense. He sees it as a deterrent against war and makes reference to recent meeting in Geneva. Mr. MacDonald wants to see a universal deduction of arms but until that point he feels it unwise to reduce Britain's weaponry. London. Ramsay MacDonald gives speech to camera from behind his desk (probably in either Palace of Westminster or Downing St). (Nat audio) "I am sure you're all very much interested in what is known as the "white paper." The government has been compelled to increase the money that it is going to spend upon our defense. That's not because we want to change any policy, as a matter of fact, we do exactly the opposite. We are doing it because we wish to continue the policy of peace that has slackened off so badly in Geneva quite recently. We want a universal reduction of arms all over the world. Meantime, every government, not merely this, but our predecessors, have alowed our defenses to deterioriate waiting for this disarmament agreement. Now it is our duty, and we will carry out our duty, not as militarists but as pacifists. It is our duty to see that our own people are defended. We offer offense to no one. We only ask to be allowed to defend ourselves, and we're going to do it. Peace demands that it should be done." | |
