| Description: | GAZETTE “Suffolk. A Hero’s Homecoming. Sqd. Ldr. Gayford has simple - but nonetheless sincere welcome from his fellow townsmen of Hadleigh.” Hadleigh, Suffolk. CU sign painted on road ‘Welcome Home’. Large crowd gathered outside house. A banner hangs from the house saying ‘Welcome Home’ and little model airplanes hang from it. Record breaking aviator Squadron Leader G. R. Gayford (wearing civvies) walks through crowd (with his mother). He had recently broken the distance record for flight. People raise their hats and cheer. Gayford stands in front of group of Scout Cubs and other local people. He is presented with a plaque by the local British Legion. Gayford’s car is pulled through the streets by men pulling it on tow ropes to his mother's house. It is also his 40th birthday, so there will presumably be a party for him. People cheer as he goes past. He and his mother get out at her house. | |
