| Description: | Algerian Crisis: De Gaulle Plan Sparks Strike, Street Fights The worst crisis for France since De Gaulle returned to power. Following the ouster of paratroop General Massu for opposition to Charles De Gaulle's moderate self-determination plan. A night of bloody clashes among Frenchmen ends with 20 dead, hundreds injured, a general strike, and hundreds of die-hard colonials barricaded in the streets, armed to the teeth, in fiery protest that shakes all France. Est. shot Algiers skyline -- looks pretty generic, can't tell there's rioting going on. Various shots armed men on patrol. Crowds with banner, flags. At some point, this story goes into a flashback to 1958, but it's hard to tell at what point exactly. Military men walk amid crowd (is this the present or a flashback?). VO refers to 1958 scenes as we see a really serious mob scene: rioters climb onto buildings (some climbing on ropes toward higher floors), push against fence, stand on cars, hurl objects. | |
