| Description: | GAZETTE "'All is safely gathered in'. From early morn to set of sun, the farmer & his men are garnering a bumper crop to the jingle of old-time 'harvest home' bells!" The Sussex Downs. Farmer sits on horse drawn harvesting machine as it moves through a field of wheat. The crop is cut and dropped in bundles behind the harvester. Longer shot of people at work in the field gathering the crops together into bigger piles. The harvester continues its work in the background. Chimes and bells ring in the background. Men use pitchforks to lift the crops onto the back of a horse drawn hay wain. Women are walking about as part of the harvesting team. More shots of men loading the harvest onto the hay wagon. A young girl walks into shot. Closer shots of the men at work. The heavily laden cart is led away. Farm workers sit in the field enjoying a tea and meal break. The farmer walks behind them. He asks if they are enjoying their tea and then comments that the crops look good and that they've been lucky with the weather. One of the labourers replies "Ay you're quite right there governor." The farmer says "Some of these people in towns don't think too much of us farmers, but I don't know what the Dickens they'd do without us." Great 1930s harvesting footage. | |
