| Description: | It's cherry blossom time in the nation's capital. Time for the festival to commemorate a peace treaty between Japan and America a hundred years ago. The formal ceremonies took place near the two original cherry trees. On March 30, 1954 - Sadao Iguchi, the Japanese Ambassador to the United State presented a 300-year-old Japanese Stone Lantern to the city of Washington in celebration of the 100 year old treaty. The stone lantern was lit by the Ambassador's daughter officially opening the National Cherry Blossom Festival. Throngs of people gather to see the unveiling of the lantern.
