| Description: | “Washington. Another one of America’s problems. ‘Bonus Army’ take up permanent quarters in the Capital, till Congress grants their demands!” Washington DC, United States of America (USA). Members of the ’Bonus Army’ (Bonus Marchers, Bonus Expeditionary Force) sit in a Washington park, possibly on The Mall. They are flying the Stars and Stripes flag and in the back ground is the Capitol Building (Capitol Hill). A long line of men line up to be served food from an outdoor kitchen. Both white and African American men stand together and sit down to eat together. Some of the men are wearing parts of military uniform. Aerial views over large unidentified field filled with tents. They are pitched in straight line - very much military fashion. Men of the ‘Bonus Army’ line up to be given tent kits. They wash at outdoor sinks. [Bonus marchers were World War I veterans wanting immediate payments of service bonuses scheduled to be paid through 1945 to cope with domestic hardship. In 1932 they marched on Washington. Congress voted down a measure containing their demands, and most left peacefully. The remainder were forced to leave by the Army, by order of President Herbert Hoover. This May, 1933 march was the second mobilization of the "Bonus Army," and was met by Eleanor Roosevelt-- but still no bonuses.] | |
