In the full white light of global publicity - in sharp contrast to Russian secrecy - commander Alan B. Shepard, Jr., Is sent aloft in a Mercury capsule atop a Red stone missile. The 37-year-old navy test pilot is the calmest man at cape Canaveral as the count-down begins with hundreds of newsmen looking on. (Story starts here - ) Shepard is honored at the White House. President Kennedy gives him the service medal of the National Space Agency. Press. Shepard makes speech, stating , " I got far less sleep last night, than I did the night before the flight." Vice President Johnson makes his way to congratulate Shepard. And Mrs. Kennedy is seen in the back smiling ever so much and motioning to the President. She reminds him that he never pinned the medal on. The President follows through with the formality, and pins the medal on Mr. Alan B. Shepard. Parade route with the Shepard and his wife seated on back of convertible waving to the street lined crowds. All of the city roars a welcome in a parade down Pennsylvania Avenue.
