| Description: | What may be an important step in feeding a hungry world is a Canadian experiment in food radiation. They treat newly-harvested crops with Cobalt 60 - radiating fruits and vegetables to retard spoilage. Early results have been spectacular. For example, treated potatoes will stay fresh in storage for 18 months. Twice as long as non-radiated vegetables. Farm produce will retain nutritional values long and the world will eat better at lower cost. (Food irradiation) The Atomic Energy Of Canada Limited - Commercial Products building. Interior shot - Lab experiments going on with fruit and vegetables where they are radiating fruits with Cobalt 60 in the hopes this will retard spoilage. CU Three strawberries in a lab technicians hand, two of them looked dried out and starting to rot, the third however looks like its just been picked. Onions that have been radiated, once again two look great and the other is dried out. A lab technician holding two apples one is rotting and the other is just fine. Potatoes, some are shriveling up and rotting and the other potatoes look great. A trucks bed is backed up to the vegetable conveyor belt and potatoes are being treated right inside the cab of the truck. A hand on a instrument panel turning on knobs and flicking switches. A box of potatoes going down a conveyor belt. | |
