| Description: | GAZETTE "Dublin - BACK TO TENNESSEE - The remains of Mr. W. McDowell who was U.S. Diplomatic Representative to the Free State, are conveyed back to his own country." Dublin, Republic of Ireland. Troops on horseback, followed by troops, marching along the road. Horse drawn carriage with a coffin bearing the remains of William Wallace McDowell, covered with American flag is driven along the road just behind the American honor guard. Dignitaries walking behind coffin. There are crowds on boat sides of the road. More important people, judging by their attire, civic men. Following them, more unidentified men. [William Wallace McDowell (born 1867) died in Dublin on April 9th. The "Tennessee" reference seems somewhat obscure, as McDowell had apparently been born in Montana, served as the Lieutenant Governor of Montana, and, immediately before his posting to Dublin, Chair of the Montana Democratic Party. He had been appointed as the second American representative to the Republic of Ireland earlier in the year. It was a short term.] | |
