Behind the scenes filming on the set of "The Longest Day". Begins with scene of bombing - Canadian or British soldiers run towards the camera with guns on a battlefield, downed D-Day glider; explosions; wounded carted off. Soldiers regroup. MS Lord Lovat, the famous wartime Commando leader talking to actor Peter Lawford who portrays him in the film. The film features reconstructions of the D-Day landings. This story focuses on the daring glider raid on the Caen Canal and Orme River bridges led by Major John Howard. Major Howard is played by Richard Todd. Troops in the reconstruction of the battle are current members of the gallant "52nd" (now part of the 1st Greenjackets). Narrator describes the raid over shots of the film being made. CU Todd as he chats with Major Howard. CU Major Howard. CU Todd and Howard. MS Lord Lovat instructing soldiers. CU Todd and another star. Good CUs dirty Richard Todd chatting w/ John Howard. MS John Howard showing the troops some old-style hand to hand combat (looks more like he's dancing). MS Sean Connery being dirtied by PA. High angle shots show the filmmakers at work. CU Soldier being made up to look wounded. CU Corporal showing Private how to hold Sten gun. MS First aid man carrying wounded man. LS Soldiers advancing under heavy fire. We pan to r. from beg. of shot. Explosion behind soldiers Step panning. Some soldiers dive for cover and other run out of pic. There is a boom in top r. corner of pic. MS Soldiers rushing towards us. Behind them are wounded soldiers trying to move along. MS More wounded soldiers. Pegasus Bridge has been reconstructed and we see a re-enactment scenes of the arrival of the commandoes at the bridge. Various explosions and shots being fired. Invading troops led by Peter Lawford and a man playing the bagpipes cross the bridge. We see the camera being moved on a "dolly". "Only a film you might say" states the narrator "but nevertheless an exciting and moving incident from Britain's proud heritage..." We see cameraman and director and other stage hands preparing for a battle scene. Director gives signal for explosions and we have two explosions on bridge. He then gives signal for actors to run across bridge amid smoke and debris. MS Cameraman working on camera. LS Soldiers running across bridge. LS Other side of bridge. We see number of soldiers running. We are panning from r. to l. from beg. as soldiers run to bridge. Explosion in b.g. They run into cover of bridge. MLS As they shelter behind bridge. A soldier from other side of bridge runs in and shakes hand with leader. Another explosion We see camera on a small trolley. MS Todd and fellow actor on bridge. Camera comes into pic. LS Looking down to bridge we see technicians in f.g. and actors in b.g. We see a bullet bounce off bridge. LS Troops advancing over bridge headed by bag pipes. LS Camera crew on dolly. We see director calling troops forward dolly tracks back. MS Dolly tracks back we pan with it. Stop panning with dolly and pan with on-coming troops. LS Troops advancing.

Great behind the scenes footage of film production. Interesting to note that "The Longest Day" was shot & released on B&W film, the footage here being color.
