| Description: | Film opens with Amateur Cinema League titles (professionally done for hobbyists to insert in front of their home movies), then drawing of people in snow suits as main title. Writing is hard to decipher, but says A Movie Showing Beautiful Jamaica - Robert Altman 1937. Quick cut of map of Cuba, then LS of 4-engined Pan Am clipper landing in water, swinging into dock. Through the window shot of takeoff, then title saying Our First View of Cuba. Aerial of land, shaky views. Over the shoulder shot of pilots, then landing views of Havana town. Good shot through window of another Clipper getting refueled at dock, title says Refueling - Then On To Kingston. MS passengers getting off, or on (it's hard to tell). Interior shots, views of clouds, and debarkation at Jamaica. Scenic views of island from ground. Pan across sleepy-looking Montego Bay - single destroyer in harbor. 06:16:02 man climbing down coconut tree, brings coconut and hacks it open. Tourist man and woman drink from it. Another man climbs up tree. 06:20:55 The Supreme Court Meets - showing some sort of ceremony outside colonial building. VIP arrives, is saluted by men in pith helmets. Street market with good views of life for the non-tourists: women carry trays of yams (?) on their heads, sell them on the ground. 06:22:08 homemade title reads Sugar, and we have interesting views of cane production: ox-drawn carts bringing the chopped cane in for processing. 06:23:00 title reads Lucky Men - The Women Do The Work, and women are shown harvesting something from ground. Good 3 shot of women. More street scenes, then brief shot of sugar mill. 06:26:00 more market scenes, good shots of people with baskets on heads. This is good slice-of-life stuff: open-air selling and trading in 1937 Jamaica. Herd of cattle is shown. | |
