| Description: | BEAUTY - A SKIN DEEP COMMODITY (BY JOE NOBLE) Animation on the subject of beauty being in the eye of the beholder. Cartoon by Joe Noble, on the theme of the many different ideas of beauty. "Venus was the classic personification of beauty, but would Venus still be beautiful in modern clothes?" CU sketch of nude with long flowing hair. It is supposed to represent Venus. Beside the nude, a hand with pen draws arch-shaped line which then turns itself into a sketch of woman in nearly the same posture but dressed in modern clothing. Drawing covering whole screen, supposed to be representative of Modern Art - a bunch of geometric designs and lines with an eye and a pair of lips; this is entitled "Portrait of a Lady." MCU tilt down cartoonist at work sitting at slanted table. He sketches something in pencil, then draws over it in ink. ECU artist draws head of cartoon rabbit. He then moves pen back and forth and the rabbit turns its head back and forth as if pen is pulling it. Rest of rabbit's body appears and there follows a short animated joke section. Seen inside picture frame: LS statue of Peter Pan in garden. 2 women approach, pause to look, walk on. MS duck on cement border around pond; pan upward to big block monument with bas-relief sculpture of nude woman with birds. Next, a series of drawings representing still more ideas of beauty - to a flapper it's a sax player, to a dog it's a bone, to a cat a garbage can with fish etc. sticking out. To a Scotsman, it's a bottle of scotch, to cameraman, it's acrobats, to an Chicago type gangster (whom they name "Cigar-Face Malone from Chi") it's a machine gun. Finally, they show a drawing of a man with top hat & stick, looking through binoculars. Cut to real film to show his idea of beauty: MLS bathing beauties posing with airplane, one stands on top like a statue, 3 others stand beside plane on ground. MS one of these girls on wing of plane, waving. | |
