Low ang. tower on top of Reichstag, with some of roof broken in. LS 5 policemen walk through archway in which firehoses are rolled out. Very good shots panning up and down inside the ruined Reichstag. LS street outside after the fire, with fire trucks still parked, hoses on sidewalk. MLS police officer comes out doorway; can see that a hole has been smashed through one of doors. Nazi supporters in uniform march behind a band down a large street. Parades & rallies (along with SA terror) leading up the the Reichstag elections on March 5. March 3, 1933. Nazi parade. MLS S.A. marching band. Various high angle shots of the parade on cold wet day - -incl a clever shot taken from under cannon very high up looking out over the wide tree-lined street on which parade approaches. March 4, 1933. The NSDAP hold torchlight rallies on the eve of the election. High angle shots of Nazis marching holding torches. MS group of uniformed men pass by, marching w/o torches. MLS bonfire - -this is odd, but it looks like a bonfire of the torches; a guy tosses another one on the fire; another man sprays something on fire, seems to be extinguishing it. But..... more shots of lines of torches moving past in the dark; torchbearing Nazis marching through a tall arch. March 5, election day. 25,000-strong group of Stahlhelm march. (Stahlhelm was a paramilitary veterans' organization associated w/ nationalist politics, later melded into the S.A.) LS some of the marchers. MS Stahlhelm chief Franz Seldte watches from balcony. High ang. MLS of Stahlhelm guys marching. MCU Neurath (?) and army officer along with other officers watching. Cut back to march. (French v/o begins here.) CU poster w/ large pictures of President Paul von Hindenburg and Germany's Chancellor since 31st Jan, Adolf Hitler. CU Zentrum (Center) Party poster. CU another poster. MLSs campaign workers for 5 different parties stand outside voting site with placards urging voters to choose the number representing their party / LSs banner over a street "The East Chooses Hitler". High ang. MLSs over heads of press, police and others as Vice-Chancellor Franz von Papen comes walking along sidewalk to the polling place, enters. Inside polling place. CUs ballot box, hand dropping ballot into slot. MS election judges checking lists of voters. High-ang MLS from rear as a man in Army uniform, a man in civilian dress, 2 policemen enter polling place. Dark int. shot as they enter. Hindenburg arrives; gets out of car, tips his hat to people who are waving & saluting. Shot from inside as Hindenburg pauses at door while a small bouquet is handed to him. CU Hindenburg comeing out of voting booth. Von Papen & wife(?) exit the polling place. Von Papen striding down street toward cam, tipping his hat; people running behind him - -kids just being kids, photographers trying to get a shot and police trying to keep up. MLS/ MS Foreign Minister von Neurath & wife arrive at the voting location; he too is tiipping his hat to the crowd. Trans. of title "Continuing its impartial reporting, Pathe-Journal delivers you new documents on Germany - - and urgently begs you not to demonstrate." Shot looking over heads of rows of SAs at a rally, panning rt. with Hitler and other leaders as they walk up the aisle. High angle over the men standing in rows. March music. May 10. BOOK BURNING of "un-German writing" organized by German students' organization. MLS groups of young men carrying stacks of books, others throwing books, amid much shouting (natural sound). MS the fire burning. LS the students throwing books on the fire as others watch: helped by a few S.A. men. MS fire with burning books. ORANIENBURG, one of the earliest concentration camps. French title "Life of political prisoners in the concentration camp Oranienburg.:" LS, MS pan on political prisoners (at this date mostly Communists & Socialists) wearing their own clothing, sitting on the ground under guard; doesn't look like stereotypical camp, smaller & less organized. LS pan to group of the prisoners who are singing and playing instruments. Same shot but song now finished; a guard blows a whistle. CU guard shouts an order and the prisoners all get up and run off to left. MLS guard inspects prisoners who stand at attention. MCU the unsavory looking guard shouts; we see heads of 2 men as they go off to rt & another behind him. MLS Laundry: 3 prisoners scrubbing clothes on a wooden table outdoors, another is at small washtub. LS prisoners shoveling dirt and rocks from a pile into a cart. MLS Prisoners in line for at a table where a prisoner is dishing up food while guard watches. CU he fills bowl with soup from a ladle. - -fairly thick looking soup too! Another shot as they are getting food. MCU looking down long table where the prisoners are eating & talking among themselves. CU 2 prisoners. MCU 2 others eat while leaning against bales of hay. (NOTE: ORANIENBURG was set up in a rather haphazard way at an empty brauerei that had been transformed into a prison. Although Oranienburg even at an early stage had a bad rep for maltreatment of prisoners, it looks like conditions are not nearly as bad as they would be in the camps later. Even if life here is being portrayed in this film as better than it actually is, the inmates still look fairly well-fed and strong and with individual personalities.) | |
