| Description: | BOY MOTOR CYCLIST Six-year-old Johnny Shipwash rides a motorcycle at Lydden Auto Sports Track Dover, Kent. M/S of numerous motorcyclists with sidecar passengers starting off in a race before a large crowd at a countryside racetrack, Lydden Auto Sports Track, near Dover, Kent; panning left as they drive off we see the starting man wearing a knotted hanky on his head. M/S as the contestants race past us. M/S of a motor cyclist climbing onto his stationary bike in a paddock to adjust the mechanism, panning right along a row of bikes to show Bill Shipwash working on a small motorbike with sidecar; C/Us as he tests and adjusts the brakes. M/Ss of BS working on the bike as a small boy, his 6-year-old son, Johnny Shipwash, walks into shot and puts on his helmet; C/U as BS helps him. C/U as JS fastens his gaiters; M/Ss as he climbs onto the small bike and is helped to start off by his 21-year-old brother - also called Bill - who then rides on the sidecar. Commentator tells us "Johnny does his practise in the paddock before participating in the meeting as a special attraction between races". M/S of the racetrack as two contestants speed past with sidecar passengers leaning out for balance. Nice M/S of a crowd of people in summery clothes sitting on the grass by the side of the track watching and shielding their faces from the dust being blown up by the bikes; a row of 1950s/1960s cars are parked behind them. M/Ss and C/U in the paddock as JS climbs onto a larger bike with car, tests the brakes and he and his brother start off; C/U of their father watching them go. M/Ss of JS and brother driving along the track as the brother leans out over the side of the car. C/U of a middle-aged couple in sunglasses watching; she has a scarf on her head and another over her nose and mouth to shield against the dust. Commentator: "Because of regulations Johnny will not be allowed to compete in race meetings until he is 16; and yet for his 7th birthday his father is already building him a full size 500 cc machine." M/S as JS and brother drive rather carefully round the track. Nice C/U of two small boys lying on their fronts, talking and watching; M/S as JS and brother drive towards us and off round the track. | |
