| Description: | Crisis in 1931 causes the fall of the Labour government and the formation of a new coalition National government with Ramsay MacDonald remaining as Prime Minister. (Note: Story is chopped up & out of order. Sound is very muffled in first part.) Title in French: "La Crise Ministerielle Anglaise, Londres." Crowd milling around in the street outside No.10 Downing street watch as ministers come out, get into cars and leave. Pan with Stanley Baldwin as he walks to car. More of crowd milling around. (SOUND IMPROVES HERE; COMMENTARY saying the PM is on his way to resign) MS pan on photographers swarming around car as it pulls away from. Pan as car drives away down street past a noisy crowd of both friendly and unfriendly. Pathe notes also name J.H. Thomas and Arthur Henderson. Another crowd waits at B. Palace.; they watch as the car drives away from the Palace; (it turns out he is still the PM; the King has asked MacDonald to form a new coalition government with members of the Liberal Conservative and Labour parties.) Back at No.10....MS MacDonald entering. MS Liberal Party leader Sir H. Samuel standing at door of No. 10. Margaret Bondfield walking down street, then MCU standing. LS outside gates of palace. (Commentator says Miss Bondfield has just given the King her resignation; however she must have changed her mind because she continued as Minister of Labor until later that year when she lost her seat in the General Election. Bondfield was one of the first women members of the House of Commons.) MS/CU Cabinet members pose outside No.10. Philip Snowdon (?) Sir Herbert Samuel, Lord Reading, | |
