| Description: | Prime Minister of USSR Nikolai Bulganin and Secretary of the Soviet Communist Party Nikita Khrushchev arriving at press conference and taking seats, press applauding. They sit with interpreters before mikes. Bulganin starts talking - in Russian, followed by interpeter. “Our stay in Great Britain to which we came, on the kind invitation of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Anthony Eden, is coming to an end. Today after a 10 day visit we’re leaving this remarkable country filled with friendly feelings towards the British People and their government who has shown great hospitality towards us, the representatives of the Soviet Union. As a result of our stay here, we have become convinced the British People do not want war. As they strive toward peace, towards the development of good relations with the peoples of the Soviet Union. During our stay in the United Kingdom, we have visited a number of cities and regions of the country. On our visit to Oxford for instance, we acquainted ourselves with the scientific institutions of one of the oldest universities in Europe. We met with scholars and students. This is not surprising if only because it is well known that Britain is a participant of the Atlantic Block, for which, you know this well, we cherish no love. It happens that even members of one family, sometimes quarrel among themselves, and it is well known that we’re not in the Atlantic Block, whilst Britain is not a participant of the Warsaw Treaty. For this reason too, there were dark moments in our relations and consequently also in our discussions. … a profound concern this is the peoples of the Soviet Union and the peoples of Britain… First of all, both sides recognized and the strengthening of Soviet - British Relations in various spheres, political, economic, cultural and scientific, would be in the interest of the peoples of both countries. The program as you see is a solid one and there’s a good deal to work on. We, Soviet People, take this program seriously and will strive to turn it into reality. During our discussions Nikita Sergi Khrushchev and I … … conclusion, would like to avail ourselves of the opportunity of the present press conference in order to convey our very best wishes for the happiness and prosperity of the peoples of the United Kingdom, and successes in the struggle for peace throughout the world.” | |
