| Description: | BURIAL OF UNKNOWN SOLDIERS AT ARC DE TRIOMPHE Paris, France Solemn occasion of the entombment of France's Unknown Soldier under the Arc de Triomphe de l'Etoile in Paris; Jan 1921; the coffin is transferred from a room in the Arc where it has rested since 11-11-1920 while its permanent tomb was prepared. MS Elderly veteran holding a velvet cushion w/ medals pinned on it, Legion d'Honneur, la Medaille militaire et la Croix de Guerre. LS Group of civil and military representatives mostly French but some foreign such as Britain's David Lloyd George; some shake hands. MLS French soldiers in battle dress carry flag-draped coffin out through narrow door and past other soldiers & veterans; they are followed by a church official; this procession arrives at area where crowd is gathered. Different view of coffin being carried past & soldiers set coffin down. French Minister of War Louis Barthou takes cushion with medals presented by the old vet, places it on coffin; makes a speech. (during this some junior officers hat falls in front of camera.Soldiers pick up coffin w/ ropes. MS French Army color guard. Cut back to soldiers lowering coffin into grave. Wide shot crowd in front of leg of the Arc as people begin to place huge floral displays on long stone block which will be sealed over grave; photographers & cameramen perched above & behind crowd. CU block of stone w/ many flowers on it. MS women (war widows & bereaved mothers of dead soldiers ) pass by adding flowers, some crossing themselves. Some wearing mourning; complete w/ long black veils. Funerals; death; casualties; memorials; monuments; French Army. | |
