| Description: | As Israeli troops consolidate gains on the Sinai Peninsula, hope for a peaceful outcome to a Suez crisis rises with British Prime Minister Eden’s offer to withdraw Anglo-French forces from the Canal zone in favor of a United Nation's police force. Establishing shot - Israeli contingents driving in the Sinai desert in a flat bed truck towards the Suez Canal. MCU - Israelis marching through a deserted town on the Gaza Strip, As they pass a deserted building you see bullet holes on the outside wall of the house. MS - On the sea there is a captured Egyptian destroyer being towed in port of Haifa. Sir Anthony Eden addresses England giving his views: "We stepped in because the United Nations could not do so in time. If the United Nations will take over this police action we shall welcome, indeed we purpose that thought to them. Police action means not only to end the fighting but also to bring a lasting peace to an area in which for 10 years have lived or tried to live under the constant threat of war. Until the United Nation Force's are there waiting to take over we and the French must go on with the job. Until the job is done." On the heels of Eden's address the General Assembly hears Canada's proposal for a police force to resolve the crisis. A proposal overwhelmly adopted in the face of a desperate situation | |
