| Description: | "The rough chalk arrives at the refinery." Small train pulls crates of chalk to the refinery. "The chalk is tipped into a wash-mill." The crates are tipped and men push the chalk off. Machinery moves the chalky water around. Large blades churn the water. "The chalk mixture passes through filters to storage tanks." Liquid is pumped over filters. Pan across very large storage tanks. Man mixes the liquid with a long pole. "The mixture is pumped to presses which squeeze out the water." Machines working, men turn levers. Water pours out and into a trough. Slabs of chalk are then taken out of the press and placed on a barrow. "The damp cakes of chalk are taken to the drying rack." Man heaves the slabs on to the racks. "When dry, the chalk cakes are taken to the powdering plant." Dry cakes are dumped from a wheelbarrow into a hole. A conveyor carries them up into a machine. Looking down on the gears that rotate and grind the cakes into powder. "The powdered chalk is bagged and dispatched." Sacks are held under a funnel and filled with powdered chalk. The workers are very chalky! Sacks of chalk travel up a long conveyor belt. The sacks are stacked. Freight train moves off with the sacks of chalk visible. | |
