| Description: | MISSING 12/23/2003 CHEESE MARKET The Friday cheese market in Alkmaar, Holland is seen in full swing. Alkmaar, Holland. L/S of the town square. It is Friday, therefore it must be the cheese market! M/S of large round cheeses being stacked on the ground after being lifted from the back of a lorry. Camera pans along the cheeses - there is a lot of them! The cheeses are rolled along the ground from man to man and then stacked. M/S of group of men crowded around a cheese display. One man picks up the cheeses and raps them with his knuckles. Narrator states: "It's not sufficient for the cheese to just look nice, and a prospective buyer gives them a "going-over" in more senses than one, before he is satisfied." C/U of the man inserting a metal instrument into one of the cheeses to pull out a sample. He smells the cheese and tastes a piece (he has a large cigar in his hand while he is doing all this). He decides to buy and he and the stall holder shake on the deal. A traditional hand slapping routine takes place. M/S of two men stacking up round cheeses on a strange sled like "cradle". This is then picked up and carried by means of ropes over the shoulders of two men. They are part of the famous "Cheese Carriers Guild". These men are appointed by the City Council and take cheeses to be weighed. Narrator explains the history of this tradition over shots of the men carrying the sleds of cheese. C/U of two women in traditional Dutch costume. L/S of cheeses being picked up off a "cradle" and thrown into the barge of a purchaser. | |
