| Description: | CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL THE ROAD TO HAPPINESS Scenes from the Orthopaedic Hospital for Children, an "open air hospital" opened in 1929, which emphasized the therapeutic benefits of fresh air & sunshine. Group of nearly naked children frolicking about, picking flowers in a pasture. They wear only sunhats and black triangles covering genital area. Some have plaster casts, leg braces or prosthetics. MS girl w/ leg in short cast sitting on ground holding bunch of flowers. MCU some of the kids pose w/ bouquets. Kids cross pasture w/ their flowers walking w/ difficulty. A nurse walks with them carrying the smallest girl. Kids coming back through gates of hospital. Pan on exterior part of hospital, a long single storey building with walls virtually all windows and a roof partly made of glass. Lunchtime. MCU pan w/ small girl as she carries a lunch plate across room; turns & smiles. MS /CU small kid eating at table on patio. MCU a girl sits on bed; eating. MS nurse spoon feeds another girl lying flat on bed. Pan on a few girls eating at table. Wide shot patio. Nurse walks past 2 kids eating at table others sitting on very low cots or chaises longues. Close shot kids in beds on patio in shade of tree. Nurses walk on patio past beds tucked under eaves. Hi ang LS hospital ward w/ many beds, greenhouse roof. One side completely open to the outdoors. Kids play catch ouside. MS girl sitting up in bed reading w/ doll beside her. MLS this girl & another girl play catch from their beds. MS 2 children lie on beds not moving. One wears eye protectors. CU happy baby in buggy. MS Doctors & nurses taking cast off kid's upper body. MCU putting cast on leg, smoothing plaster with their hands. Van from Royal National Orthopedic Hospital pulls up at building on city street. Driver opens back doors. Some of the child patients, still nearly naked but looking more incongruous in the city, walk toward camera into building as people in street stare. 2 men carry in an older girl on stretcher. Another man enters carrying girl (this one is wearing a dress). Shot of large waiting room w/ high ceiling. Many people waiting for appointments. LS Nurses examine several different patients in one largish room. MS girl in street clothes sits while nurse uses an electric machine to test girls arm. 2 men (doctor; intern; ?) fit rather complicated brace on girl lying on couch. Kids wading in water at seashore. MCU 2 toddlers on beach playing in sand w/ buckets & shovels. No one in these shots has braces; casts; etc. At hospital Dr & assistant lift girl from couch & stand her on the floor, supporting her. She wears leg braces from special shoes all the way up to the hips, and connected to a sort of corset around her torso. She walks stiffly while holding doctor's hand.
