| Description: | CHINESE VILLAGE aka CHINESE CITY Scenes from shooting of 'Inn of the Sixth Happiness' - great shots of Ingrid Bergman, Freddie Young etc. Elstree, Herefordshire. L/S of the typical English countryside. Camera pans to show the rooftops of a Chinese city. Several M/S of the inside of the city: muddy grey roads, poor crumbling houses, typical Chinese architecture, authentic craftsmen shops, market with authentic Chinese vegetables, dried fish, meat... This is an ancient city of Wangcheng reproduced in Elstree's MGM studio as a set for the film Inn of the Sixth Happiness. M/S of four people (among them Freddie Young, the cameraman) carrying a camera across the set to find the correct position for shooting of the execution scene. As they carry the camera, many extras, some in uniforms, some civilians can be seen around. M/S of Freddie Young (with a cigarette in his mouth) looking through the camera. M/S of a man handing the sabres to the Chinese soldiers. M/S of Mr Mark Robson, producer and director of the film, as he looks through the camera. Several shots of the general preparations for the shooting. M/S of film star Ms Ingrid Bergman having her hair done. C/U shot of David Middlemas (assistant --) adjusting the camera. M/S of Ms Ingrid Bergman having her makeup done. C/U shot of the face of Mr David Middlemas shouting into megaphone. L/S of a man on the roof top switching a large reflector on. Clapper boy with a clap (clapperboard?). M/S of the camera tracking back. L/S of the scene - execution on the town square. L/S of the arrival of the executioner. It is not possible to see the execution - one only sees the sabre rising up in the air and going down. Camera concentrates on Ms Bergman who is suppose to run in panic. Great shot of Ms Bergman running in fear and panic towards Freddie Young. Panic on her face transforms into a great smile as she runs into his arms - fantastic hug! | |
