Beachy Head, Eastbourne, East Sussex Cliff Rescue training exercise performed at Beachy Head by the Eastbourne Police rescue team. Policeman blows his whistle standing on the edge of Beachy Head. The Eastbourne Police rescue team spring into action, pushing a large winch on wheels across the grass, unloading stretcher from ambulance etc. Various shots of the team preparing their rescue equipment before staging a rescue for a man 'injured' on the rocks below. CU man attaches safety hook of their winch cable onto rope; MS one man is strapped into a safety harness which has a walkie-talkie attached. CU another man in dark overcoat talking into walkie-talkie. The rescuer's safety harness is attached to rope which is woven through frame of the stretcher and attached to winch. He edges himself backwards off the cliff holding onto stretcher frame as it is lowered; we see his progress down the edge of the cliff. Narrator gives us figures of number of deaths per year there are at Beachy Head ("about 6"). Rescuer reaches bottom of cliff and the injured man. CU chief atop cliff talking into radio telephone /walkie-talkie. Rescuer lifts injured man into the stretcher then it is hoisted up the cliff. "This may be a demonstration but the risks are just as great" states the narrator. Various shots of the rescuer & stretcher going back the way they came; he is carefully climbing up holding to stretcher above him; intercut w/ shots of scene on cliff top - -man with walkie-talkie; team winding the winch. Once at the top the stretcher is carried off. | |
