| Description: | "COCKLES" Leigh on Sea, Essex. View of the waterfront at Leigh-on-Sea showing wooden-fronted buildings. The Osborne's fishing boat moves past and we travel with them down the estuary. The boat sails past Southend Pier. When they reach the sandbanks, they drop anchor and wait for the tide to go out. At low tide they take their baskets and rakes and wade through the water. We see the men raking the cockles from the wet sand into nets which are emptied into the baskets. The baskets are emptied into the hold of the ship then the men make their way back to the waterfront. The cockles are unloaded then washed and dried in a building on the front. Various shots of cockles stalls and bars at the seaside. They prepare their equipment for collecting cockles. The men put on waders and carry large baskets through the water. | |
