| Description: | Cocoa farming & processing on plantation; british dominion of south africa; 1920s. Very good footage. Opens w/ shot of cacao tree w/ ripe fruit pods ready for harvest. A few african men sit on the ground cracking pods w/ mallet & tossing them to other men who open them. Next; shot of man using long-handled tool to spread the fruit over a large & rather rickety-looking table. A long line of african women and men walking up a dirt path carrying bags of cocoa beans on their heads. People walking through forest single file; this is a nice shot w/ the sun through the trees making great light/shadow contrast. Following shot is women walking across long stretched over ravine in the forest; 1 woman carrying baby on her back. Next; automobiles driving down road; past a few small buildings; also man on bicycle; a few pedestrians. Shot of men dumping bags of cocoa beans into separate piles. Another group of men rake the beans; spreading them into an even thin layer. Wide shot port from where the beans are shipped. Pan over area: many bags & crates stacked up on shore; workers carrying more; rowboats farther down on beach; long shed; pier stretching out; cargo ships farther out in the harbor. Closer shot of men working; carrying heavy bags. Loading bags onto rowboats; launching boats; other crews returning in rowboats after delivering cargo to ship. Industry; distribution; food; chocolate; imperialism; colonialism | |
