| Description: | "Recent investigation has shown that the warble pest can best be attacked by a systematic destruction of the warble maggots in the ox by the application of a suitable dressing in spring and early summer." "Derris powder has been proved at all official trials to be the most efficient dressing. It must, however, be combined with soft soap, which involves a messy and tedious process." CU Preparation of the dressing (a combination of Derris Powder and soap) which attacks the maggots. Farmer mixing treatment over a Bunsen burner. It is mixed in a pail. Various shots of the mixing. "Derris powder may now be obtained with the soap already incorporated, only needing the addition of warm water." More shots of mixing. "Here the cattle are being collected for warble dressing." Farm hands move the cattle. "The use of a race or crush-pen is often recommended..." The cattle in a very small stall. "...but this is not essential." Several cattle in a larger pen. "The warbles are located with the finders and the dressing is applied to each warble successively." Various shots of the farmer applying the dressing to the cattle. "From one to three weeks after applying the dressing the shriveled extremity of the dead warble may be seen protruding from the hole." CU of the back of the animal. "The dead and shriveled maggot is easily withdrawn." CU extracting the dead maggots from the animals with a tweezers. "Compare this with the living maggot of the same age." The living maggot is placed next to the one removed from the treated animal. The living one is huge. | |
