| Description: | TLS/MSs large crowd of young Haitians crammed onto streets of Port-au-Prince; prevailing fashion influence is undeniably American, what with all the logo t-shirts, baseball hats, and kerchiefs, but this may have more to do with second-hand donation than dictates of U.S. culture; some people play maracas, dance, most chat & wait for event to begin. MSs maracas being shook above heads as crowd begins to move forward in mild crush. Festival street scene. MS young man wearing demonic skull mask in crowd. A fight breaks out in the press for space but it is quickly settled amicably as the camera zoom into bells of two tubas lurching above the sea of heads; zoom back out as people push each other about for space. MS/CUs rara band-- drums, percussion, trombones, trumpets, tubas-- playing in crowd, people beginning to dance in what little space is available to them. Rara is a traditional Haitian folk music played in slums & streets of Port-au-Prince during the weeks of Lent. MS orange flag being waved above crowd. MSs young men singing, waving arms & maracas exuberantly in air-- one fella with backwards baseball cap & sly smile give the camera two middle fingers; another young man gives the camera a comically wide-eyed goofy expression. | |
