| Description: | CURES FOR HICCUPS (aka UNIQUE HICCUP CURES) Scantily-clad showgirls try out hiccup cures in a dressing room C/U of showgirl Denise Warren in a dressing room in The Gargoyle Club in Soho in London; she is shaking some pepper into a glass of whisky as part of a cure for hiccups. C/U of Iris Chapple looking on. M/S of the five glamorous girls, all in showgirl costumes; DW hands the cure to Kay Ellis (who wears an extremely scanty bikini-type costume); both girls place the rim of the glass on Kay's stomach and she lies down on the dressing table holding the glass there so the glass is upside down and the whisky is on her flesh! The other girls look on. C/U of Kay holding the glass against her stomach (she has a large fabric flower covering her navel - we are in the navel taboo age) panning left to show her face as she hiccups - not very convincingly. C/U of Jill Millard mouthing to Kay "Are you all right now?" then shaking her head; Kay sits up, removes the glass and wipes her stomach. DW tries out the next cure: Kay lies down while DW grates some potato over her diaphragm! DW pats it firmly onto Kay's skin (good sound effects) while she hiccups; it still doesn't seem to work so DW wipes it off. The next cure involves Kay sitting on the table with her fingers in her ears while DW puts a glass of water to her lips to drink; it seems to have worked, then Kay hiccups again. Commentator says "There's one old wives tale which recommends placing the little finger of one hand against the thumb of the other and thinking of someone you love. The girls didn't believe in things like that so we tried this instead". M/S as we see DW putting a large paper bag over Kay's head, which commentator explains "increases the intake of carbon dioxide and soothes the respiratory system". DW turns and smiles towards camera and all the girls walk out of the dressing room, leaving poor Kay sitting there hiccupping in the bag. (home remedy, wives' tale) | |
