| Description: | DAMMING THE THAMES Good shots of River Thames; models and diagrams for a new dam over the river at Woolwich. River Thames, London. Several brief shots from a boat travelling down the River Thames, showing the Houses of Parliament, Somerset House, St Paul's Cathedral, warehouses, Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, the docks. Various shots illustrating the fact that the Thames is a tidal river; the mud flats at low tide; a man gets into a hole in the river bank made by the constant scour of the tides. Diagrams and models explain the idea of Mr J H O Bunge, an engineer who wants to build a dam to stop the tides at Woolwich. The dam would consist of six locks to take vessels of varying size, with a causeway furnished with sluice gates and a roadway and railway over the top. This would eliminate the lines of traffic waiting to cross the river on the Woolwich Ferry, and the ferry itself! Looks like an early idea for the Thames Barrier. | |
