M/S more men descending in another bucket lift. G/V men standing around at the top of the shaft. Beneath the surface: travelling shot men working with drills at the bottom of the shaft. M/S black workers operating jack hammer drill, pan down to the drill drilling its hole. M/S Mr. P. Joubert, mines surveyor, pulling steel tape measure to the bottom of the shaft, he shouts up at the people at the top. Above the surface: M/S mine boss "Big Jim MacAlpine" switching on his intercom. C/U notice board on wall with signs reading: "USSR v S. Africa" and "New Boutoff 868 ft.". Mr. MacAlpine writes on the other side "Vaal Reefs 922 ft.". C/U notice board. C/U black workers applauding. M/S bucket lift carrying workers coming up the shaft. C/U shaft doors closing and trolley being wheeled on to the doors, pan up to the bucket coming down and resting on the trolley. G/V record breaking shaft head.
