| Description: | Defense Treaty: Ridgway Heads NATO As Pacts Are Signed. "As the former UN commander in Korea arrives to replace Gen. Eisenhower as commander of Western Europe's NATO forces, the German peace treaty is signed in Germany by the four powers. Paris Reds greet Ridgway's arrival with violence, and the treaty signed is answered by other Communist threats. But the West moves forward toward greater security." Welcome back to the Cold War. Various men arrive for meeting in Bonn; among them is British Foreign Minister Anthony Eden. Men sign a document. (The picture has problems toward the end of this section.) In Paris, General Matthew Ridgway (Ridgeway), his wife and their son (who's carried by another military man) disembark from a plane; the General shakes hands with the French minister of war, then General Dwight Eisenhower and Britain's Bernard "Monty" Montgomery. Ridgway lays a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and signs guest book. | |
