Credentials checked at door, Newsmen, journalists typing, smoking etc. CU states name - signs - California, Minnesota, Tennessee, New York, Texas, Pennsylvania. James Farley waves. India Edwards (woman considered possible vice presidential candidate, according to narrator). South Carolina Governor Jimmy Byrnes (James Byrnes). Gov. Williams of Michigan waving. Congressman Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr. is in attendance. Overview of packed Convention floor. More shots of various delegates, some wearing funny hats, political buttons. Democratic National Committee Chairman Frank McKinney calls the event to order. Gov. Dever speaks: " Mr. Chairman, delegates, my fellow Americans... the issue is to ensure the reign of peace. One thing along threatens our tranquility; the menace is Communism, both at home and abroad. To contain it abroad, we must be strong and we must have strong and friendly allies. To eradicate it at home, we must continue the fight to eliminate the economic injustice, social intolerance, and racial bigotry on which Communism breeds. The containment of that menace abroad and its eradication at home is the only road to peace, the only means of preventing World War III (World War Three, World War 3), the only way to meet the challenge of our times. The Democratic Party alone can meet that challenge. During the next four years, America needs a Democratic president, loyal to the principles and policies, both foreign and domestic, of the New Deal of Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Fair Deal of Harry S. Truman." Applause. | |
