| Description: | DISCOVERY EXPEDITION Various scenes of the South Pole during the Discovery Expedition. "With the Discovery Expedition in Antarctic." (The British, Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition (BANZARE) was formed under Sir Douglas Mawson's command and set sail for the Antarctic in October 1929.) View from ship, with part of deck, rigging in FG, then pan rt. across water to large white glacier in distance. MCUs penguins on rocks. LS penguins walk through snow, rocks. Lots of penguins hanging out on rocks. MCU man crawling toward penguin, reaching out to it as the bird backs away and squawks at him. (Do they squawk? this is silent anyway.) Several LS more rather spectacular glaciers. Sailors perched on net hanging from ships's bow (shot from deck). View from ship approaching Anvers Island (which this expedition named); pan on sea full of chunks of ice; larger glaciers in BG (and ship's bow in FG). View from ship looking to side at water covered with chunks of ice. WS pan on icy sea w/ big glacier in BG. WS pan on Wiencke Island: big lumpy mountain w/ some snow on it, and a great big white slope of snow gradually rising along edge of water. Pan rt to ship stopped by island, and in BG pointy rock mountains. A few shots of icy water with shark fins visible swimming near boat. | |
