Interpreter, interpreting Dr Adenauer's speech: "I'm very grateful to the Prime Minister for having sacrificed his Sunday for this discussion and talk with me. I believe that after my return from the United States and before the forthcoming conferences, this discussion and this talk was very good and very fruitful. I should like to take this opportunity to tell the British people that the Federal Republic of Germany will stand to the treaties she has concluded, will stand to NATO and to the Western European Union and that the Federal Republic of Germany will be a loyal and good partner of the West." CU Sir Anthony Eden's reply. "I am glad to have this opportunity to talk with the German Chancellor again. I am sure that he is right in saying that the discussions we have had this afternoon have been useful to our two countries and to the cause of peace. Last autumn, it was largely through the help that he gave us that we were able to conclude the treaties which now unite Western Europe. It is on the basis of that unity that we all look forward to discussions with the Soviet Union and to try to promote a relaxation of tension. We wish all good fortune to the Chancellor in his own endeavours to this end and in particular to the efforts he has made in the reunification of German which he desires to see as we desire to see. I hope sir that you will have felt from your welcome here ... how sincere we also are to work for the unity of the West and therefore for the peace of the world."
