| Description: | DUTCH BULBS Tulips and daffodils have their heads picked and made into garlands Somewhere between Haarlem and Leiden in Holland. L/S of a Dutch field of tulips in various colours; a windmill with sails turning is seen to the left, next to a long greenhouse where various flags are flying. Pretty M/S of a section of the field showing red tulips, daffodils and narcissi, and the blossom branches of a tree in the foreground. C/U of golden tulips bobbing in the breeze. M/S of two men picking red tulips that are bobbing furiously in the wind! They put the blooms into baskets. M/S of men picking narcissi heads that are emptied from the baskets into a barge on a river or canal. Commentator says "The flower heads are picked off so that nourishment is not taken from the bulbs in the sandy earth below. [sic] The millions of heads and petals are thrown away - the world's sweetest refuse - or used for local flower festivals and parades". Various shots of two young girls and one boy (all wearing clogs) who sit on wooden crates by the tulip fields and fix the flower heads into garlands "not only for their own personal decoration, but for sale to the tens of thousands of tourists who come from all over the world to see the springtime miracle of the bulb fields". M/Ss of a man standing at a roadside and holding out a flower garland, displaying it to the passing cars; his garland stand is parked in a lay-by. A car pulls up and a woman gets out; she and the man arrange the huge garland over the bonnet of her car. M/S of two young boys riding along past the bulb fields on bicycles; they both have large daffodil garlands around their necks - looks like they could be quite nice and warm in inclement weather. | |
