| Description: | East Berliners Jump To Freedom As the communist barrier between east and west Berlin grows higher and stronger, the more determined frowns the will of east Berliners to escape. Universal-international cameramen record a remarkable document of the escape of east Berliners despite harassment by east German troops. While attention is diverted, people cut holes in barbed wire and escape; others drop from fifth floor windows into fire nets-- anything for the taste of freedom. Woman Photographer wearing sunglasses, looking through telephoto lens. Sign in front of him reads: 'Bernauer Strafze'. German soldier pointing mirror in way of camera, glaring shot. Relatives wave hankies. Man uses mirror to glare sunlight, so cameramen can't take photos. Water hoses as well are used on camera crews. Cameraman on top of truck is showered by hose. Tear gas is thrown across wall at crowd, who in turn throw it back over wall, leading to a toss back and forth from both sides. Woman trying to jump out of window, is almost pulled back in to face arrest, but is pulled from crowd below to freedom. Wife jumps into net, her husband throws bundles out of window, then jumps into the nets of the waiting firemen below. People escape through barbed wire fenced area, woman seems to run right into the wire and collapses, other help her through, she is seen later walking away with quite a gash on her forehead. | |
