| Description: | ENSURING A PLACE IN PARADISE Citizens of Mombasa pay homage to Allah at ceremony of "hasen Hosen." Mohammedan devotees pay homage to Allah at the religious ceremony of "hasen hosen". Mombasa, Kenya. MLS procession coming down street of single-story houses; groups of men carry 2 poles on which are mounted very elaborate many-layered towers with decorations hanging all over them; in front of the first of these there are statues of 2 winged horses attached to the poles as if pulling the tower. Other men walk in the procession alongside the bearers and between the 'towers' and more people watch from side of street. MCU old man playing some sort of pipe; behind him men with arms linked are doing a sort of dance, stepping forward then back. Another view of towers coming up street; MS of the horse statues and front tower, which then comes to a stop. MS 2 men who are in rather scary costumes (representing demons, perhaps?), wearing caps with animal-like ears, tails, body paint; - and one has mask including a fake long tongue sticking out!. They begin to jump about in a frenzy as if possessed. (Maybe a tradition limited to Kenya, from a mixture of Islam and traditional religions?) | |
