| Description: | GAZETTE "FASCIST & ANTI-FASCIST MEETING - Over 100,000 people attend demonstration in Hyde Park." Hyde Park, London. Several shots of the huge crowds gathered in Hyde Park reportedly for Fascist and Antifascist demonstrations. There is no more information given in the segment. An autogyro (or autogiro, an early helicopter) was employed by the police to help regulate the crowds, in addition to mounted policemen (seen in the distance) and officers on foot (presumably). Perhaps Pathe was afraid to get their cameras in harm's way, as all shots are from a tall building overlooking the park. [The autogyro, a CIERVA C30, was reportedly first used by the London police in June of 1934, and was based at Hendon. London was one of the first, if not the first constabulary to use an autogiro, having enlisted an earlier Cierva to monitor Derby Day traffic in 1932.] | |
