Description:FERRY LOAD (aka FERRY ROAD) Lorry travels by ferry from Tilbury, Essex to Antwerp, Belgium then on by road to Lake Garda, Italy.

M/S inside a cabin on board a ship as a passenger arrives and a steward helps him unpack; there are two sleeping berths and the passenger tests both of them with his hand. M/S in a lounge on the ship; the barman prepares to open the bar; some passengers, a couple with a baby, walk in and sit in comfy chairs as the man goes to the bar to order. Commentator tells us this is a ferry for the transportation of commercial vehicles, although it carries regular and business passengers too. M/S of the ferry in dock at Tilbury in Essex as a truck passes in the foreground carrying some large machinery. Commentator says "The ferry itself is based on a wartime design, adapted, without much difficulty, to the uses of peace". As we see M/S of the doors opening in the bow of the ship, commentator mentions that the idea comes from a tank landing craft, specially built so that war vehicles could drive straight into the hold and disembark easily onto beaches and other places where cranes and docks were not available. M/Ss as a British Road Services lorry is backed down the ramp onto the ferry. C/U of a man on the ferry who makes minimal hand signals to guide the driver; another man puts a wedge behind the wheels; M/S of some men wheeling in a support for the lorry. M/S panning right of other vehicles being made secure. Nice shots as the sun sets (or rises!); the ferry moves along the River Thames out to sea where it is daylight again (not sure if the sunset belongs to this story as everything else takes place in daylight). M/S of the Captain and Helmsman on the bridge; high angle M/S of passengers looking out over the rail. L/S of the ferry approaching the harbour at Antwerp, Belgium; mix through into M/S of a truck driving off the ship; M/S from the quayside of a man guiding a lorry off the ship. C/U of Customs Officers talking; one inspects a large concrete object, presumably the load of a truck, then puts a seal on it (I think!). M/S of a woman and small boy watching in the street. M/S of trucks driving off the quayside and past the ferry in the dock. M/S of a lorry driving off (carrying a Babbitless Gyratory Crusher - large cylindrical thing!) as commentator says from Antwerp "it's no more than a hop, skip and a jump to Holland". L/S across a lake in Holland with windmills and houses on the far side that the lorry passes. M/S of the lorry comes past one of the windmills towards us; mix through into M/S of a lorry driving away from the camera along a road in a Tyrolean mountain village, on its way to the Brenner Pass through the Italian Alps. L/S as traffic passes along a lakeside road of the Brenner Pass, with huge tree-covered mountains in the background. L/S of traffic travelling along the pass, with rolling hills in foreground and mountains beyond (and there seems to be a long line of traffic stuck behind our lorry!); mix through to high angle M/S of houses beside Lake Garda in Italy (looking rather wet and gloomy here); the lorry drives slowly along the road running beside the houses, "very near the end of the drive from Antwerp" says commentator.
