| Description: | Shaky light in contrast and imagery Tremendous property damage results from a blaze which engulfs the major portion of chicago' cattle mart. Structures were completely wiped out. Even tight supervision couldn’t prevent fire injuries. On May 19, 1934 the Chicago stockyards caught fire, resulting in $4.5 million in losses. 133 Chicago companies responded, backed up by 31 suburban departments that covered the rest of Chicago. The city lost six pumper trucks and one hook and ladder unit during the fire, plus 30,000 feet of hose. No fire fighter lives were lost but 12,157 sick days were recorded, mainly due to dysentery from fire fighters accidentally drinking bad water at the Stockyards. | |
