UPPERS (AMPHETAMINE, METHADRINE, METHAMPHETAMINE): A CHEMICALLY DERIVED STIMULANT USED UNDER MEDICAL SUPERVISION, FOR TREATMENT OF MILD DEPRESSION, WEIGHT LOSS AND NARCOLEPSY. TAKEN ORALLY OR INJECTED THE ABUSE OF UPPERS MAY LEAD TO EXCITATION, TREMORS, TALKATIVENESS AND HALLUCINATIONS.
This film is "designed to be an interlocking and comprehensive drug education program for the upper elementary to secondary high school child.... that group of children who are most susceptible to drug abuse." It is "the result of many months of research and interviews with children, educators, social workers and doctors and use the most advanced concepts and film techniques." This film "uses the best combination of reality and recreated events based on fact and actual case histories. FOCUS ON UPPERS is narrated by Mission Impossible actor GREG MORRIS. SYNOPSIS: Ours is a pill taking society. Headache pills, liver pills, wake-up pills, go-to-sleep pills. Most drugs are designed to put the body's functions back on track; to make it function properly. FOCUS ON UPPERS focuses on a group of drugs, amphetamines-- speed, meth-- whihc are rarely prescribed by doctors and do just the opposite. Uppers make the heart beat faster. They supply false energy. Often they make individuals overextend themselves to a point of physical and emotional exhaustion. The film visually portrays the effects of uppers in a variety of situations. Doctors PHILIP CITRON, MORDECAI HALPERN and RONALD CITRONBAUM give the results of their experience and research on uppers. This includes recent clinical evidence (on screen) that speed cause a lethal disease called necrotizing angiitis. The student is left to make the decision himself: will he quit the world on a HIGH or join it to make this the best of all possible worlds?"
Following a funky opening title sequence we are wisked into the seedy world of speed and the speed-freaks who reside there. MSs inside high school locker room as several black & white males get ready for practice; coach calls for them to get on the track so all exit except one African-American male who procures a prescription bottle of speed from his locker. CUs white teenage girl burning the midnight oil in her bedroom; to stay alert she unfolds a wad of tin foil, produces a speed tablet, takes it. MS four very eager, very young black & white teens in kitchen, one of lad dispenses speed pills from a plastic baggie loaded with tablets.......... MSs Greg Morris (check out the godawful Technicolor pants he has on) sitting in a library/den, talking to cam.......... ECUs speed tablets: benzedrine, dexedrine and methedrine. Slow motion MS black male teen running towards cam, jumping hurdles; cut to real time as he trips on one and falls to the ground, clutching his calf in pain. MS/CU white teen girl from earlier, sitting in classroom, trying to take test but grappling with her weary head (can't concentrate). MS/CUs four REALLY young-looking teens in living room, dispensing and taking speed with soda pop; of course, a speed party ensues: MS/CUs (some low angles) wiry and gangly kids dancing in a living room, wearing admonishable 70s fashion clothes & brittle-dry hair, one dorky fellow spilling his drink & agitating a compadre.......... CU white teen girl taking aspirin with water. MS white teen girl in pajamas, sitting on bed, taking sleeping pills. CU lon-haired white male teen taking caffeine pills. MS montage of a male teen in a doctor's office: he gets weighed, has his blood pressure taken, and is asked medical history questions. WLS United Airlines jet airplanes taking off. MSs mechanic working on a lifted car's wheel well. CU dentist at work on a male teen (uses drill and mirror).......... MS Dr. Citronbaum talking to cam. MSs tired teen sitting on a bench at an outdoor court while friends shoot energetic baskets around him. CU old alarm (clock-radio) going off; MS long-haired girl teen in pink pj's rising from bed; she goes to dresser only to find no more speed left so she gets back into bed. MSs young teen girl nibbling on a sandwich (not much of an appetite). CU teen rolling her head in class, massaging her temples.......... MS Dr. Citron in lab, talking to cam. MS Dr. Halpern talking to cam, x-rays on board behind him. CU x-ray of a healthy kidney. CU x-ray of a speed-freak's damaged kidney. CU x-ray of a female speedfreak's damaged liver.......... TLS white teen girl trying to study at a desk in her home while her younger sister skips rope in front of her; MS/CU older sibling freaking out, yelling at lil girl, tossing a book at her (temper, temper).......... CU montage of the kids at the speed party and why they take the drug. A hip psychologist explains.
