No public demonstrations greeted the announcement by General De Gaulle that the Right Wing leader is willing to take over the powers of government. The streets are quiet with gendarmes in evidence where ever the eye turns. Primer Pflimlin held urgent conferences with governement figures. As Gaullist followers procailmed a mass rally. French Communists followed with a call for a general strike. France was well aware that Civil War was near. Algeria officially a department of Metropolitan France was under control of a military junta there a 400,000 man army defied the government. But at home, thousands of troops and police were on the alert for any disorders. There was apprehension in the air and a ominous quiet in the streets of Paris.
