| Description: | FUNERAL OF KRUPP WORKERS Funeral procession of German workers in Essen; who were killed by French occupation troops during a demonstration; March; 1923; strong communist & socialist symbolism. Essen, Germany High angle view of procession in progress crossing bridge, approaching, on road flanked by spectators; can see factory buildings in BG. Marchers carry many different flags & banners w/ elaborate designs - -maybe trade union banners? Closer shots men & boys walking; small marching band playing; etc. Banners include one with a German language version of the French republican slogan "Liberty Equality Brotherhood"; to left & a few marchers forward a man carries a pole on which is mounted a star w/ hammer & sickle emblem; then later a bigger floral version of the same- - KPD (Kommunist Partei Deutshland) group? This floral hammer & sickle leads off a succession of people carrying large wreaths. Then larger marching band. Soldiers in the procession are wearing white armbands. Teams of horses pulling wagons carrying the coffins. Large crowd walk slowly behind the procession. NOTE: German workers at the Krupps factory had walked off the job; protesting among other things the French Army re-occupation of the industrial Ruhr Valley (which had begun in January in reaction to Germany's failure to meet their reparations quota to France). In the midst ot the demonstration a French soldier fired at the workers and 13 were killed. | |
