| Description: | GIRDLING THE EARTH Factory Making Belts. Scenes from a factory making not girdles to keep fat in but twisted ropes w/ tassles on the end such as are used to tie back curtains, or sometimes as belts for clothing. Very good shots of machinery and close shots of skilled worker. Tottenham, London MCU worker holds up a bunch of these things tied together. MS woman workers standing at machines. MCU woman worker at machine keeping in order strands of thread from many different spools which all merge together. CU loom weaving the threads or yarns into tightly woven strips. ECU same: teeth of loom moving. MCU woman cuts off the strips coming out of the machine. MS elderly male worker fastening one end of the long woven strip to a machine that's like a wheel w/ teeth sticking out of the top part. LS the man walks across the room pulling a spool w/ several of the strips attached to it; he hooks the strand around one of the hooks on a cross-shaped thing, then walks back across the room. CU he hooks strand on another tooth of the wheel machine. Another shot of him walking across the room and back pulling the spool. (Titles say that he walks 20 miles a day at this job!) MLS the man stands behind the machine w/ the wheel and pushes it forward while spinning the wheel. ECU the strands being twisted together. MCU he hooks more strips onto the wheel. CU the hands of a worker making a tassle: he combs out the ends of one of the twisted ropes, ties them together, etc. all very quickly. Then he shows the pair of tassles he has made. | |
