| Description: | GOING DOWN A brief history of the diving suit, helmet and equipment used for reaching the seabed. Europe Brief shots of swimmers diving into a swimming pool; a girl by the side of a lake puts on an old-fashioned, heavy diving helmet; underwater shot shows people in diving helmets walking along a lake or river bed; a man in a diving helmet and suit lowers himself into the water. Several animated diagrams shows the history of diving suits, helmets and breathing apparatus and how they work. We also see 'Iron Men' - large 'observation suits' that take men to the seabed and the 'Bathysphere' that can go to an even greater depth. More diagrams show the invention of Dr Strathosphere-Pickard (sp? the well-known balloonist) - a sort of free-floating ball that can reach depths of more than 5 miles. Commentator wonders "what is the attraction in those depths?". To answer the question we see a man in a diving suit sitting on the seabed beside two mermaids. | |
