| Description: | WETA "GREAT UPSET OF '48" WORK TAPE IN 04.00.35-Interview with Harry's daughter MARGARET TRUMAN discussing the events of election night 1948, she had barred all TV and Radio sets from the house, but had a direct phone line to Democratic headquarters, so she knew the facts before the stations did. She also had to tell all the reporters that Harry Truman was not in the house, and couldn't talk to them. Recalls the Chicago Tribune headline "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN" and TRUMAN'S arrival back in Washington after winning the election, parading past the Washington Post building where reporters had hung a sign indicating that the were ready to EAT CROW. Recalls Harry Truman doing an imitation of a radio broadcaster who announced his defeat. Discussion of the decline of RAILROAD CAMPAIGNING and cross-country tours for campaigns, at cost of reducing direct communication with voters. 04.07.45-Margaret Truman recalls how Bess Truman felt about the campaign. Says she didn't enjoy campaigning as much, she was a private person at heart. Talks about how TRUMAN'S REPUTATION as a President underwent a tremendous rehabilitation, from mediocrity around the '48 elections to being regarded as a great leader and hero by the time he died. 04.11.21-small talk by Duke and his engineer/producer about how the Margaret Truman interview went and which bits they think are good for the show.
