| Description: | HATS THROUGH THE AGES - BY JOE NOBLE History of headgear told through cartoons and animated sequences by Joe Noble. Drawings of various styles of hats through European history, sketched by Joe Noble; mostly still pictures, but a little animation, and ends w/ actual film of contemporary (1930s) women. Cartoon of group of cavemen and cavewomen standing together; others walk by in FG wearing weird hats- -rock tied on head, bone stick through hair, bird's nest. Next, drawing of woman's profile wearing hat - title says "100 B.C. - A cap of fur or coarse wool trimmed with a feather." Woman wearing cloak over her head. 3 versions of headdresses from the 10th century, all different versions covering head like hood but also going under chin, with face hole. Odd looking 13th cent. headdress - like a shiek's with a sort of curved cloth horn on top. Back view drawing of person wearing hood which ends in a long tail in back like long stocking cap. Next, profile of woman in fancy version of the hat with tail. Profile tight little hood with a thing like the edge of a saucer around the top of the skull, from 1400. Another from same period looks like weird mini helmet with earmuffs and a cowl coming up over the chin! Next, the "Pantomime Principal Boy" hat - sort of a Robin Hood hat with long pointed brim in front, and a sprig stuck in the back. 15th century peak hats: drawing of 2 women wearing the well-known tall conical hats with fabric "tails" hanging down from the top. "Peaks of wondrous height, draped with fine muslins." Profile of a more dramatic version. Cartoon of person in tall peak hat driving an automobile with hole cut in the roof for the hat. Next, another still drawing of a bizarre hat from 1470 AD. Looks like an upturned vase or basket worn on the head with a light veil hanging down all around and 2 things sticking up like ram's horns! Hat from 1500 with a huge slanting brim (looks very modern) and a crown that actually does resemble a huge crown. More and more hats. Series of drawings of hats from reigns of Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, James, Charles I. CU artist's pencil draws modern (1930s) woman wearing a simple hat (in this representation it actually looks like a American GI hat or "beret" from much later). MS 3 women wearing winter coats w/ big woolly collars and little hats perched on their heads. | |
