| Description: | 'HIMALAYAS OF THE GREAT NORTH WEST'. Canada. Animated maps shows the location of the St Elias range of mountains on the Canadian side of the Canada - Alaska border. The range lies in the Yukon Territory. Shot of a steam train ploughing through the snow to the tiny settlement of Carcross where some American explorers established their base camp. Aerial shots of the beautiful snowy mountains and glaciers as we fly over them in an aeroplane. Shot of the plane landing near the mountain camp of the explorers. We see men setting off on sledges pulled by huskies and others climbing up the side of a glacier. Blizzards cover their tents with snow. Night shot of the tents and equipment during a blizzard. More shots of the men and dogs moving their supplies and equipment on across the glaciers and mountains. Amazing scenery as they pass a colossal unknown peak of over 14,000 feet. Conditions are better as they head west towards the Alaskan boundary. Mount Hubbard and the vast Hubbard Glacier are mentioned. The men climb over rocky and icy mountains with backpacks - this section they called 'Hell's Half Mile', along the edge of the Nunatak glacier. More beautiful mountain scenery as commentator tells us after 84 days on the ice they reached their goal - completing the first successful crossing of the St Elias range. This is really good footage of an expedition. | |
