| Description: | HORTICULTURAL RESEARCH Plants put up with the tampering of students and professors of a Horticultural Research Department. Reading, Berkshire. Research of plant life is carried out by students and professors at the Horticultural Research Department of Reading University. Various shots show carnations and chrysanthemums being picked and packed at a greenhouse. In the Horticultural Research Department of Reading University, a woman snips off the leaves of a chrysanthemum and presses them between two sheets of glass, then photographs them. She traces the outline of a leaf with a a special instrument to measure it. A man in a greenhouse fixes a kind of clamp over the leaf of a potted plant; a contraption attached to the clamp forces the plant to 'breathe' through it's pores; two students watch the experiment. Several thermostatically controlled plant incubator tanks are seen; a woman takes a plant from one tank; a man looks through a little window into another tank. Another man draws a curtain around a group of plants on a table, then goes inside the red-lit enclosure and inserts a needle into the plant's stem. A programming card is fed into a large machine to control the light. The same plants are injected with radioactive food, so it can be followed around the plant with a Geiger counter. A woman in a blue-coloured room takes a small container of seedlings into a red-coloured room. | |
